Refiner plates don't fail overnight. They give you warning signs—if you know where to look.
Sign 1: Rising specific energy (kWh/t) for the same freeness target. This is the earliest reliable indicator.
Sign 2: Reduced throughput or flow capacity. As bar height drops, pumping capacity decreases. Plugged grooves can end a plate's run even when metal remains.
Sign 3: Fiber quality drift. If the same settings no longer produce the expected pulp, wear is a likely cause—but rule out consistency and fiber length changes first.
Sign 4: Physical inspection findings. Rounded bar edges, groove plugging, cracked bars, or plate clashing. Measure against the supplier's discard limits—don't guess.
The golden rule: Judge by condition and performance, not operating hours alone. Track bar height, groove depth, throughput, specific energy, and fiber quality together.
